How to make Candles with natural fragrance oil

Why make your own candles?

Making your own candles has many benefits over buying them from a store.

Firstly, it allows you to create candles that are unique and personalized to your taste. You can choose the wax, wicks, fragrance, and color to match any occasion or mood.

Secondly, making candles at home is often more cost-effective than buying them, especially if you make them in bulk. You can also reuse materials and containers, which is more eco-friendly than buying new candles each time.

Thirdly, most store bought candles when burning it releases trace quantities of toluene and benzene. Toluene, in paint thinners and adhesives. Without proper ventilation, toluene exposure can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and skin. It can also cause headaches, dizziness, confusion and anxiety. Benzene is a gas emitted by forest fires, volcanoes, and burning coal or oil. Benzene is carcinogenic, having been found to increase the risk of leukemia and other blood cancers.

Lastly, making candles can be a relaxing and therapeutic activity that can reduce stress and anxiety. Materials

• Wax.

• Fragrance oils

• Candle wicks

• Candle containers

• Double boiler

• Thermometer

• Stirring utensil (metal spoon or spatula)

• Hot glue glue for the sticks if needed.

Step#1 - Prepare your work area

Set the all the materials over the kitchen counter, ready to start making your candles.

Step #2 - Choose the wax.

I would highly recommend using natural waxes such as coconut, beeswax , soy wax etc. Waxes such as paraffin, is known to contain cancer-causing chemicals as it is made from petroleum. Vegetable waxes (soy and coconut) and beeswax are sustainable, naturally sourced options considered safe for your health.

Once you have chosen your wax, melt it using a double boiler. Make sure to monitor the temperature of the wax and keep it between 30-39 ℃ for natural waxes.

Step #3 - Prepare candle containers

While waiting for the wax to melt. Prepare the containers, by gluing the wicks in the bottom center. If you are using a mold and it doesn't have a hole for the wick you will need to create one. Find the center of the mold and pierce a hole with the wick needle.

Step #4 - After wax is melted

Once the wax is melted, remove it from the heat source and let it cool down to around

60-65℃.

Step #5 - Add Colour then Fragrance Oil

When your wax is at temperature, drop in the crayon coloring bricks and stir until they are firmly melted.

Add your desired fragrance oil to the melted wax. The recommended ratio is 15ml of fragrance oil for 250g of wax. Stir the mixture well to ensure that the fragrance oil is evenly distributed.

Step #6 - Transfer wax

Pour the melted wax and fragrance oil mixture into the prepared candle containers.

Step #7 - Let it set!

Let the candle cool and set completely. This usually takes about 24 hours or less.

Step #8 - After setting

Once the candle is fully set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch using scissors or wick trimmers.
